What is a Tooth Filling and Why you need Tooth Filling regularly?
Dental fillings are restorative materials that help to manage any damage caused on the surface of the teeth. The damage could be caused due to dental decay or caries, minute chips or cracks. 1. Amalgam filling: It is silver coloured filling and it is usually used to fill the chewing surface of the back teeth. This filling has higher strength, are less expensive and less esthetic than other types of dental fillings.
2. Composite fillings: These fillings are tooth-colored fillings and come in variety of shades. They are fairly strong and last less longer than other type of fillings and are not resistant to staining from tea or coffee. Due to their aesthetic appeal, they can be used both for front and back teeth and for covering cervical caries (below gums).
3. Glass-Ionomer fillings: These fillings are also tooth-colored fillings and they contain fluoride which is released in the tooth cavity. The fluoride protects the surface of the tooth from bacteria. They are usually less durable than other types of fillings.
4. Ceramic Fillings: These tooth-colored fillings are made from porcelain and are stronger and more resistant to staining than composite fillings.
5. Gold Fillings: These fillings are also used to fill tooth caivities but have lost their popularity nowadays and are as durable as amalgam fillings.
The duration of tooth filling Procedure
Usually, the procedure lasts for upto 30 to 45 minutes depending on the extent of the tooth decay or damage and the type of the tooth flling used.

Based on the depth of the damage in the tooth cavity, the dentist injects local anesthesia for a painless dental experience. If the cavity is not too deep the procedure can be performed without local anesthesia
The dental decay is removed using dental drill and the cavity is prepared for dental filling.
The selected tooth filling is placed into the cavity. In case of composite filling, the filling is placed in layers and hardened using a curing light after placing each layer.
The dental filling placed in the tooth cavity is shaped according to the tooth structure while ensuring a proper bite for chewing. Then it is polished to remove any kind of roughness on the surface.
