What is Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction is a procedure in which a tooth is removed from its socket in the jaw bone. Dental extraction is routine procedure performed under local anaesthesia and is performed by dentists in dental hospitals or clinics. A dentist usually recommends tooth extraction when the tooth cannot be saved by any of the treatments such as Root canal treatment, dental filling or when the tooth poses a risk to one’s oral health.

Conditions under which a Dental extraction is recommended by the Dentist

1. Severe tooth decay/Infection : There are condition when the tooth decay and infection has spread beyond repair by tretaments such as Root canal treatment and dental crown.

2. Gum Infection : In cases of severe periodontitis/ gum infection, the tooth loses its grip and becomes mobile due to lose gums. If the stability of a tooth cannot be restored even by gum surgery and bone grafting, a dentist recommends for tooth extraction.

3. Overcrowding of teeth in the jaw : In order to treat overcrowding, the dentist recommends tooth extraction to create space for creating alignment using Orthodontic braces.

4. Impacted wisdom tooth : In order to treat the impacted wisdom tooth that is stuck inside the jaw bone casuing pain and swelling, the dentist or an Oran surgeon recommends for tooth extraction.

5. Fractured tooth : In cases when the tooth is fractured beyond the gum line and cannot be saved, the dentist recommends tooth extraction.

6. Preparation for Dentures : the teeth which are damaged are removed so that the missing space can be restored using dentures/dental prosthesis.

Consequences of not opting for a Dental Extraction :

1. Severe pain and swelling due to damaged teeth and spread of infection to other parts of the gums and jaw bone causing severe gum disease/Periodontitis and bone loss respectively.

2. If the impacted tooth is not removed then it causes the spread of infection to the jaw bone causing severe pain and swelling of the face.

3. In case of overcrowding, if the teeth are not extracted for orthodontic braces, it can cause malalignment of teeth and gum infection as the teeth and gums become difficult to clean due to overcrowding.

The main différences in these two types of dental extractions are the type of the tooth extracted, the level of invasiveness and the time required for recovery.

Factors

Level of invasiveness

More invasive, requires surgical incision

Anaesthsia used

Performed under local anaesthsia

Can use Local or general anaesthsia

Recovery time

In 3-4 days

In 7-10 days

How to decide for the best option?

The decision depends on several factors such as:

WHY IT MATTERS

Why Is Tooth Extraction Sometimes Necessary?

Tooth extraction may be recommended when a tooth is severely damaged, infected, impacted, or cannot be restored. Removing the affected tooth can relieve discomfort and help protect your overall oral health.

Relieves Pain & Infection

A severely decayed, damaged, or infected tooth can cause persistent pain and affect the surrounding tissues. Removing the affected tooth may help eliminate the source of infection and discomfort.

Protects Surrounding Teeth

When a tooth cannot be saved, extraction can help prevent infection or damage from spreading to nearby teeth and supporting tissues.

Prevents Further Dental Problems

Impacted wisdom teeth and severely damaged teeth can sometimes lead to swelling, infection, crowding, or other complications. Timely treatment can help prevent these problems.

HOW IT WORKS

Tooth Extraction - Treatment Journey

From your initial examination to post-extraction socket care, each step is carefully planned to ensure a safe, comfortable, and smooth tooth removal experience.

01

Initial Examination & X-Ray

The dentist reviews your medical history and performs a thorough examination of the tooth and surrounding areas. Dental X-rays may be taken to assess the tooth’s position and its relationship with the underlying bone.

02

Local Anaesthesia

Local anaesthesia is administered to numb the area around the tooth, helping ensure a comfortable and painless extraction procedure.

03

Tooth Removal

For a simple extraction, the dentist or oral surgeon gently loosens the tooth using dental instruments before carefully removing it with dental forceps.

04

Socket Care & Aftercare

After the tooth is removed, the socket is cleaned and compressed with gauze soaked in Betadine. You will then be asked to bite down on the gauze for approximately 30–45 minutes to help control bleeding.
