Dental Crown And Dental Bridge

What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is a custom-made tooth-shaped cap that is placed over the damaged or decayed tooth to restore the shape, size, structure and function of the teeth. Usually, they are placed over the root canal treated tooth to restore the strength, on the implant root to restore the bite or in the front teeth to restore the aesthetics and a beautiful smile.
When Are Tooth Veneers Recommended?

Tooth veneers are recommended when anyone wants to enhance their smile.

1. Chipped or cracked teeth: Tooth veneers can help in restoring the strength and function of chipped or cracked teeth.
2. Tooth discoloration: Tooth discoloration caused by excessive fluoride ingestion, medications or when a discolored root canal treated tooth cannot be corrected by tooth whitening.
3. Diastema or gaps between the teeth: When there is a gap between the two front teeth(diastema) or between other teeth, veneers can help improve alignment.

4. Worn-down teeth or irregularly shaped teeth: Tooth veneers can help improve the shape, length, and function of the worn down or irregular teeth. 5. Misaligned teeth: Tooth veneers can help in minor alignment corrections omitting the need for braces.

Benefits of Tooth/Dental Veneers

  1. Dental veneers are highly aesthetic in nature and mimic the natural appearance of the natural teeth and they help in boosting confidence and self-esteem.
  2. The procedure to place dental veneers is minimally invasive and requires removal of a thin layer of tooth structure(enamel)
  3. Dental veneers are highly durable and can last upto 10-15 years. They are usually stain-resistant
  4. Dental veneers perfectly align with the neighboring teeth in terms of the shape and the shade. The procedure is completed in just 3-4 appointments.

Types of tooth veneers:

1. Composite veneers: These veneers are used in cases of mild cosmetic correction.
Tooth colored composite resin is used to achieve desired results. Composite resin veneers are easier to fix, less expensive than porcelain veneers and are likely to chip or fracture or get stained over time. They may last around 5 years.
2. Porcelain veneers: These veneers are custom-made and are used to correct several aesthetic imperfections. To place these veneers, a thin layer of enamel is removed from the natural teeth. The roughness created on the teeth surfaces helps the veneers to stay in place. Porcelain veneers provide a more natural, tooth-like appearance, are less likely to chip or fracture or get stained and can last upto 20 years

3. No-prep veneers: These veneers require even lesser preparation and time to apply on the tooth structure. Only a section of enamel is removed for the preparation and the veneers that are prepared are of the thickness of a contact lens. Examples of such veneers are Vivaneers, DURAthin and Lumineers and if taken care properly, these can last for upto 20 years.
4. Same-day veneers: These are custom-made porcelain veneers are ideal for correcting minor tooth imperfections and are called Cerec veneers. Such veneers can be made only by the clinics who have CAD-CAM technology incorporated in their clinical setting.

Step by step procedure of Tooth/Dental Veneer Placement:

1. Initial consultation: During this step the dentist evaluates the state of the teeth. Depending on condition of the teeth and the esthetic goals the patient wants to achieve, the dentist prescribes tooth veneers. If the patient agrees for the treatment, the dentist takes the 3D measurement of the teeth using an intra -oral scanner (depending on the availability of the scanner)
2. Intra-oral scanning and photography: In some cases, the measurement of teeth using intra-oral scanner are taken during the second visit. Along with this. Photographs of the teeth are taken so that they can be referred for treatment planning that includes matching the tooth shape and shade.

3. Tooth Preparation: During this step, a thin layer (0.5mm) of enamel is removed from the front surface of the teeth. After tooth preparation, impression is taken to be sent to the dental lab for the fabrication of veneers.
4. Bonding the Veneers: Once the tooth veneers are received from the lab, the dentist checks the fit and shade of the veneers. Once everything is checked, the surface of the prepared tooth is cleaned and the veneers are bonded to the surface using a special adhesive. To create a strong bond a curing light is used to hardens the adhesive.
5. Final Adjustments: The dentist makes minor adjustments to ensure a perfect fit and bite alignment of the teeth.
