Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction is a procedure in which a tooth is removed from its socket in the jaw bone. Dental extraction is routine procedure performed under local anaesthesia and is performed by dentists in dental hospitals or clinics. A dentist usually recommends tooth extraction when the tooth cannot be saved by any of the treatments such as Root canal treatment, dental filling or when the tooth poses a risk to one’s oral health.
What are the conditions under which a Dental extraction recommended by the Dentist :

1. Severe tooth decay/Infection : There are condition when the tooth decay and infection has spread beyond repair by tretaments such as Root canal treatment and dental crown.
2. Gum Infection : In cases of severe periodontitis/ gum infection, the tooth loses its grip and becomes mobile due to lose gums. If the stability of a tooth cannot be restored even by gum surgery and bone grafting, a dentist recommends for tooth extraction.

3. Overcrowding of teeth in the jaw : In order to treat overcrowding, the dentist recommends tooth extraction to create space for creating alignment using Orthodontic braces.
4. Impacted wisdom tooth : In order to treat the impacted wisdom tooth that is stuck inside the jaw bone casuing pain and swelling, the dentist or an Oran surgeon recommends for tooth extraction.
5. Fractured tooth : In cases when the tooth is fractured beyond the gum line and cannot be saved, the dentist recommends tooth extraction.
6. Preparation for Dentures : the teeth which are damaged are removed so that the missing space can be restored using dentures/dental prosthesis.

Consequences of not opting for a Dental Extraction :

1. Severe pain and swelling due to damaged teeth and spread of infection to other parts of the gums and jaw bone causing severe gum disease/Periodontitis and bone loss respectively.
2. If the impacted tooth is not removed then it causes the spread of infection to the jaw bone casuing severe pain and swelling of the face.
3. In case of overcrowding, if the teeth are not extracted for orthodontic braces, it can cause malalignment of teeth and gum infection as the teeth and gums become difficult to clean due to overcrowding.

Steps for a simple dental extraction :

1. Initial examination/History taking and X-ray: The dentist will ask you a few questions about your medical history, such as heart disease, liver disease, recent surgeries (including heart, bone, and joint procedures), and any medications you are currently taking. Initial oral examination includes a thorough clinical examination of the tooth and the adjacent areas. Dental radiographs are taken to analyse the position of the tooth and its relation to the underlying bone.
2. Anaesthsia: Local anesthesia is used to numb the area around the tooth for a painless procedure.

3. Tooth Removal: in case of simple dental extraction, the tooth is loosened by the dentist or oral surgeon using dental tools and then pulled using dental forceps.
4. Socket Care: The tooth socket from where the tooth is removed, is cleaned and compressed using a gauze soaked in betadine. After that the patient is asked to bite on the gauze for 30-45 minutes.

3. The patient is asked to eat soft food that is cold and avoid any carbonated drinks for a few days after dental extraction.
